Unlocking Your Blackjack

Before you can optimize and configure your Blackjack to run at optimal speeds you must first app unlock the thing. App unlocking means you can run unsigned 3rd party software on your Blackjack. If you don’t application unlock it’s security settings, any changes you make that is registry based, will not be saved.

NEW: Please note this not a SIM Card Unlock, this is an Application Unlock. Please read the post “Unlocking the Blackjack SIM Card” to learn how to do this.

Here is the easy steps:

  1. Download and install Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0 from Microsoft. This is a nifty utility to show what security policy is in effect. If you connect your Blackjack to your PC, you’ll see two tier security policy is in effect.

  2. Download and copy secpolicies.cab to your Blackjack using ActiveSync. I got this from sems.org who got it from Telus support, after following a post on qusers.com.

  3. Run and install it. This allows you to install third party SSL Root Certs.

  4. If you run Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0 now (it is listed in Start - Programs as “Security Configuration Manager”, you’ll see now you are using One Tier Prompt. Select Security Off and click Provision. It will install tool.cab to your device and then provision the settings.

These instructions are based on the ones found for the Motorola Q provided by sem.org.

Overclocking the Samsung Blackjack - SGH-i607 Mobile Phone Hack  on June 30th, 2007

I’ve downloaded secpolicies.cab and transferred the file to my blackjack, but how to I run the file? Is there a specific place on the the phone this file needs to be transferred to? Ive moved it into the ‘my documents’ folder, but it does not show up on the phone when i navigate to that folder.

Cory  on July 13th, 2007

Doccarl, are you by chance navigating to your ‘My Documents’ from the My Stuff link in your Start menu? For some reason, someone made the grand decision to only let you view certain file types using the My Stuff file manager. If that is the case then to get the cab file go: Start > Applications > File Explorer. You should be able to scroll down to the file and hit OK.
Let me know if this was helpful. I would be more than willing to dig a little deeper if I was totally off the mark.

i can not get the second program to work. ask for a net security 2.0 or higher and installed but still not working

Doccarl  on July 15th, 2007

Actually, you hit the nail right on the head. I just discovered that the files would show up if I use the file explorer application. Thanks for the info!

Dostoyevsky77  on July 24th, 2007

This tip is freakin’ AWESOME! Thanks so much for this. It worked perfectly (except I had to d/l MS Framework on XP, and it didn’t work in Vista).

After some research, I reckon you’re the unofficial internet authority for taking maximum advantage of the Blackjack (or at least amassing the appropriate information from dark and scary places). As such , I have some general questions. I am an avid PC fan & overclocker, but ignorant when it comes to mobile devices & hope you haven’t addressed these previously for fear of sounding a twat:

Q1: Can I delete the .cab files on my Blackjack once they’ve installed?
Q2: Is there a performance hit to store programmes on the micro SD?
Q3: When - in your opinion - do you think we’ll get Mobile 6.0?
Q4: It’s my first Smartphone & I don’t care to listen to music when on the move; but I do travel a lot. Where can I get TV shows to d/l onto my micro SD for viewing later?

FYI, I bought a really wicked accessory from Hong Kong that takes the data/audio/recharge Blackjack output & turns it into a standard headphone jack (stereo). I’ll attach the link if people are interested.

Cheers,

d

i thought this was an unlock to where i could use my t-mobile service on my BJ guess i missread it. if it is i followed the instructions to the letter. and nothing

nyclad  on August 4th, 2007

Hey Cory

After downloading the cab file and opening it using WinZip, the only file I see is setup.xml. Is that the only file I need?

Cory  on August 6th, 2007

nyclad, The cab is kinda of like a exe file. It’s going use the XML file to configure your Blackjack. Let em know know if you have any other questions. - Cory

Hello Dostoyevsky77,

Could you please post the link - where you can buy the really wicked accessory from Hong Kong that takes the data/audio/recharge Blackjack output & turns it into a standard headphone jack (stereo).

I for one,am certainly interested.

As a matter of fact, if you simply type in “blackjack headphone” into an e-bay search, you’ll pull a tonne of them; maybe you can find one not from Hong Kong for faster (cheaper) shipping.

Does this unlock the simlock on the phone?

DP  on August 27th, 2007

I am trying to use my t-mobile in Blackjack. I followed the above procedure, but the phone still prompts me for the unlock code when I put my t-mobile chip in it.

KR  on October 2nd, 2007

Hey Cory I am getting the setup file onto my phone after dragging the secpolicies.cab file onto my Blackjack and trying to open it on my phone all that happens is i get a bunch of text and there is nothing to DL so now i am stuck on finishing the unlocking process! Help please i am in serious need of using this phone so i need to unlock it asap!! THanks a ton

jim finn  on October 31st, 2007

it keeps saying i need a 2.0 .net framework and i downloaded it already nd it still dont work

jFive  on November 15th, 2007

FYI, THIS DOES NOT UNLOCK THE SIM!!

I just followed the above instructions. Removed my AT&T SIM card. Inserted the SIM card (Hong Kong) and started up the phone and it asked for the SIM unlock code. I just shelled out $20USD to have site send me an unlock code.

I believe this is only an application unlock and a great way to do it. Thanks!

Cory, it would be wise to add a line at the top of this page that advises readers that this does not unlock the SIM….OR Perhaps I am just a dumbass and didn’t do it correctly.

CHEERS!

Technogeneral  on November 21st, 2007

You don’t have to pay to unlock this phone. Call up your international customer service support number if you have a provider already and explain that you are going to another country and need the phone unlocked. They were happy to do it for me, so unless you don’t already have a provider there’s no reason to shell out $20 like the last poor bloke.

I have a Blackjack and I want to use it with T-mobile; it asks me for network Pin, does it has anyway to unlock that? Please help~~~

For anyone looking to unlock the SIM CHIP of their Blackjack (or any phone with Tri or Quad Band capabilities (aka world phones) on a T-Mobile or ATT/Cingular network (USA)).

Due to a recent (near the end of 2006) decision from the US Copyright Office, its no longer illegal for customers to unlock cell phones from their wireless carriers.

Shortly after, the two leading wireless carriers whom implement the GSM “sim chip” technology, T-Mobile and ATT/Cingular, started releasing unlock codes on an individual basis if requested for legitimate use.

As it turns out, if you have plans to travel abroad (outside of North America) you can call the wireless carrier, inform them of your trip (location & dates), and they will escalate your request to their technical service department. Within 3-5 days you should receive an email with an unlock code that is tailored to your individual phone.

In my case, my wife and I have the same model phone (i-607), and I had to request codes for both of our phones while on the call with customer service. We then received unique unlock codes for each phone, ie one code does not unlock all phones of the same model.

After unlocking the sim chip your phone becomes permanently unlocked. You will then be free and able to use a pre-paid sim chip while traveling abroad.

The reason I suggested only tri/quad ban phones are they are the only phones capable of functioning outside of the US.

As far as I know, which I could be wrong, this does not do any good for CDMA phone carriers such as Verizon and Sprint/Nextel. Nextel phones use (or used to use) a sim chip but the phones are not true GSM.

Best wishes and pass it on!

ralphgids  on March 9th, 2008

Followed your application unlock recommendations, worked fine. BUT, afterward could not access internet or email. After much messing around, found that NO Security setting was the problem, when I changed to single level prompt, everything started working.

I have blackjack two with windows 6.0 and I have unlocked it using manager and the secpolicies is just html text so no go on that. I’m trying to use tom tom that I got from Isohunt If ya know what I mean. I can now sync it but phone wont open, do ya have ah clue?

Av  on July 25th, 2008

i unlocked it but my internet doesn’t work (ie: t zones)
help
thanks

Delia Marie  on July 25th, 2008

I’m just delving into this all. I’m trying to unlock the damn phone and I can’t even copy the cab file with active sync. If I just try regular old copy and paste in windows explorer it doesn’t work and if I go into Active Sync and try to search for programs, it says that there must be none available for my phone because none are being detected. if I try the explorer button from active sync that doesn’t work either.

Eventually I want to make the internet go from the my BJ2 into my computer. That’s the goal.

Another question, do you have to have internet on your cell plan for this to work? Can you just do it accessing the 3G network that I get everywhere?

Poo-poo!!! I don’t want to pay someone to unlock my phone, I want to learn a little something here!!

i accidently used this to lock phone how do i unlock it cant install .cab files no more it says not digitally signed

BAZOOKA JOE  on September 30th, 2008

Ha Yall, I don’t know about allthese codes and hassel, but I do know that if you take out your SINS card, hold the navagation key up, and turn on the POWER, you have the option to format the phones disk! Press 1, then Y,
and USE ANYONES SIMS CARD! You have to reset the Date and Time and you loose all contacts, but you can overcome these things quite easly! I had a AT&T SIMS card, Now I have a T-MOBILE SIMS Card. I think easer is better.
Not loosing your mine worying about all those codes, PRICELESS!
